Right after the Tang fell, the north cycled through five quick-changing regimes—Later Liang, Later Tang, Later Jin, Later Han, and Later Zhou—while the south broke into more than a dozen small states like Southern Tang and the Shu kingdoms, with local strongmen holding real power until the Song finally restored order.
